Ronald Price is a Professor Emeritus in the Faculty of Law, Queen’s University. He is a graduate in Law from the University of Toronto in 1958. He was admitted to the Bar of Alberta in 1960, following which he served with the federal Department of Justice until 1966, when he accepted an appointment at Queen’s University. In 1968 he was admitted to the Bar of Ontario. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1978. In 1973, Mr. Price established the Correctional Law Project, a clinical legal education program that continues as part of the Law School’s offerings.

Mr. Price has been Counsel in numerous cases in the Superior Courts, including eight full appeals and nine in person Applications for Leave to Appeal (seven of them successful) in the Supreme Court of Canada, and numerous cases before the Ontario and Federal Courts of Appeal, Ontario High Court, Federal Court of Canada (Trial Division) and Supreme Court of Northwest Territories. As well, he has appeared regularly before the National Parole Board and the Ontario Board of Review. For several years, he served as Alternate Chair of the Psychiatric Review Board (now the Consent and Capacity Board).

In 1995, Mr. Price took on responsibility for the Alternative Dispute Resolution Course at Queen’s, teaching Mediation, Arbitration and Conflict Resolution for six years.

In the period from 1996 to 2001 Mr. Price became a founding member of Associates in Dispute Resolution of Kingston (ADR/K); initiated the Queen’s Small Claims Court Mediation Service; served as a Mediator for the Dispute Resolution Service of Frontenac County, a Victim-Offender Mediation Pilot Project initiated on the invitation of the Crown Attorney for Frontenac and Hastings counties; developed the Queen’s Law Student Victim-Offender Mediation Project; and organized a number of ADR instructional workshops.

In 2001, Mr. Price joined with colleagues to form The Mediation Centre of Southeastern Ontario (MCSO), serving as its administrative Director, and responsible for the conduct of MCSO’s 40-hour Certificate Program on Alternative Dispute and Conflict Resolution. Commencing in 2001, he was for many years a Roster Mediator for the Ontario Mandatory Mediation Program in both Toronto and Ottawa.

As a Professor at Queen’s University, Mr. Price developed and taught Courses in: – Criminal Law; Criminal Procedure; Criminology, Law and Criminal Correction; Human Rights; Health Law; Psychiatry and the Law (Mental Health Law); Legal Ethics; and Public Law Litigation. Since 1996, his academic focus has been on Mediation and Conflict Resolution, as reflected in the ongoing MCSO Certificate Program. In 2014, Mr. Price was appointed Integrity Commissioner for the County of Frontenac.

rmooreRichard Moore LL.B., C. Med., CFM, Cert. Med. IMI., C. Arb

Richard Moore has over 30 years’ experience in conflict management. Having started his career as a practicing lawyer, he has retired from law practice and works exclusively in conflict management, delivering mediation, arbitration, med-arbitration, investigation, and conflict management system design services to a wide range of clientele in the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors.

Mediating since 1990, he has conducted over twenty-five hundred mediations including mediations in complex multi-party situations, and in various contexts including: employment and workplace, policing, hospitals and health care, human rights, indigenous people’s issues, public policy, estates, real estate, professional responsibility, personal injury, insurance, construction, family and property disputes.

His international experience includes introducing mediation programs into the Supreme Court systems of Guyana and the Philippines. Other dispute resolution system design experience includes significant involvement in the establishment of the Mediation Institute of Guyana, the founding of the YMCA-YWCA Community Mediation Program (now Community Mediation Ottawa), and the provision of expert advice to many Canadian public and private sector conflict management and mediation programs.

He is recognized as a mentor in the conflict management field and has taught negotiation, mediation, and arbitration skills to a wide audience including judges, lawyers, social workers, union representatives, human resource professionals, tribunal members, civil society leaders and conflict management professionals.

He is a graduate of Carleton University and Queen’s Law School and is an accredited mediator and arbitrator with the following designations: Chartered Arbitrator, Chartered Mediator, and Certified Family Mediator from the ADR Institute of Canada and Certified Mediator from the International Mediation Institute in The Hague.

Richard has held significant volunteer governance positions in not-for-profit, legal and conflict management professional associations including Past President of the Ottawa YMCA-YWCA, Past Director YMCA Canada, Past President of the County of Carleton Law Association, and past director of the ADR Institute of Ontario.

Kevan Flood

Kevin served 35 years in the Public Service of Canada during which time he held a succession of positions including: as a Senior Self-Government Negotiator with Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, as Director of Investigations with the Office of the Information Commissioner of Canada, and as an Immigration Adjudicator with Canada Immigration. He has an extensive knowledge of administrative law; skills in developing and maintaining relations with federal government departments, Provincial and Territorial Governments, corporate entities of all kinds, First Nations, and the media. He holds a Mediation Certificate from the Mediation Centre of Southeastern Ontario, a precursor to the Canadian Centre for Conflict Management.

Barbara Castel

Barbara Castel is a trained facilitator and mediator often drawing from solution focused brief therapy (SFBT). Building on her long history with the Limestone District School Board and her current Ph.D. candidacy in the Queen’s University Department of Education, Castel broadens her understanding of community relations to include organizations, members of the military who are experiencing the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder, youth in the Canadian justice system, patients in rehabilitation centres who are experiencing memory loss related to personal trauma, in-mates in federal detention centres, and groups facing conflict situations within their community.

Castel’s credentials include certification as a certified Solution-Focused Counselling Trainer from the University of Toronto (2013), in Sandplay Therapy from the International Society for Sandplay in Zurich (2009), in Advanced Mediation (2013) from The Mediation Centre of Southeastern Ontario (MSCO); Resolve Kingston certification from the Kingston Community Counselling Centre’s Mediation & Conflict Resolution and Restorative Justice program (2010), and Conflict Resolution & Intermediate Mediation Certification (2009) from MCSO.

Colm Brannigan has over 20 years of full-time experience in conflict management and alternative dispute resolution. He is the founder of Mediate.ca – Brannigan ADR based in the GTA but provides services throughout Ontario.

He has conducted over eight hundred mediations and more than hundred arbitrations. These include multi-party matters, in various subject areas, such as condominium, commercial, employment, real estate, professional negligence, insurance coverage and subrogation, construction and family disputes.

Colm is recognized as one of Ontario’s leading mediators and arbitrators in condominium related disputes. He also focuses on the resolution of construction (including green energy), commercial, insurance and real property disputes using mediation, med-arbitration and arbitration processes. He is known for promoting the use of med-arbitration and online dispute resolution as cost effective, fair and speedy methods of alternative dispute resolution.

Colm’s approach to conflict management and alternative dispute resolution includes:

developing strategies to avoid and manage conflict before formal resolution becomes necessary;
focusing on the practical resolution of disputes from the client’s perspective;
understanding that participants need results for the time and effort spent in alternative dispute resolution;
using impartial techniques that help make participants feel comfortable with the process and outcomes;
working effectively with clients and counsel to help them resolve disputes;
knowledge of the substantive legal issues involved in the process.

This approach carries over into his teaching and training and he has taught negotiation, mediation, and arbitration skills to mediators, lawyers, arbitrators, community activists and other conflict management professionals.

Colm has written extensively about conflict management and alternative dispute resolution including online dispute resolution in professional and industry specific publications. He is a frequent presenter at continuing education programs for various ADR, law and condominium groups and has spoken at regional, provincial and national conferences for such organizations as the ADR Institute of Canada, the ADR Institute of Ontario and the Canadian Condominium Institute. He is a sessional instructor in ADR in the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University in Kingston Ontario.

Colm received a B.A. from the University of Toronto, an M.A. from McMaster University, an LL.B from Queen’s University, and an LL.M. in ADR from Osgoode Hall Law School. He also holds a Teaching Effectiveness Certificate from The Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning (Humber College) where he taught law and ADR part-time in the Business School for over 8 years.

He holds the designations of Chartered Arbitrator and Chartered Mediator from the ADR Institute of Canada. He was one of the first Canadian mediators certified by the International Mediation Institute in The Hague. He is a member of the ADR Institute of Ontario, the ADR Institute of Canada, the Canadian Condominium Institute, and Toronto Commercial Arbitration Society.

Colm has been heavily involved in community and professional groups as a volunteer in such projects as the development of community legal aid clinics and local community mediation centres. He is a former Board member of both the ADR Institute of Ontario and the Ontario Bar Association Alternative Dispute Resolution Section. He is currently a member of both the Qualified Mediator and Chartered Mediator Assessment Committees of the ADR Institute of Ontario, the ADR Institute of Canada National Med-Arb Rules Committee and the Co-chair of the ADR Institute of Canada’s Taskforce on Online-Dispute Resolution.

Karen Wianecki, M.PL., MCIP, RPP

Karen Wianecki is a professional planner, mediator and facilitator who specializes in community and stakeholder engagement. Karen holds an undergraduate specialist degree in Geography from the University of Toronto and a master’s in urban & Regional Planning from Queen’s University. She studied environmental mediation through the Harvard Mediation Project and received Advanced ADR accreditation through the Faculty of Law, University of Windsor. Karen is one of three Canadian mediators on the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution Roster as well as the Native Sub-Roster based in Tucson, Arizona and is a Settlement Conference Facilitator for the Ontario Energy Board.

Karen spent sixteen years of her career with the Ontario Public Service, working for the Ministries of Municipal Affairs, Housing and Natural Resources as a planner and policy advisor, Cabinet Committee coordinator, Manager of Strategic Planning and Coordinator of Ontario’s first environmental dispute resolution program where she oversaw the province-wide work of 21 mediators and 8 arbitrators. Karen left the OPS in 2000 to establish Planning Solutions Inc., a professional consulting practice devoted to community and stakeholder engagement, facilitation, public policy development and environmental issues management.

Through her consulting practice, Karen has had the pleasure of working closely with numerous public and private sector clients in Ontario as well as in Western Canada. She has worked extensively with Aboriginal organizations and communities, Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments, special interest and environmental non-government organizations, industry, and business as well as with residents on a range of contentious issues. Karen subscribes to the notion that process is as important as product. Engaging governments at all levels, industry, and communities builds trust and creates social capital. Co-creative engagement, properly designed and facilitated, leads to innovation and learning which in turn can produce results that are truly remarkable.
